Step One
Begin by downloading all your active files. This includes your graphics, html files and any other files that you need for your site. Be sure when transferring your files you keep your directory structure the same as it is on your current web server. You should initiate the transfer at least one month before ending your service with your current provider. This will allow enough time to complete a smooth and painless transfer. Trying to complete the transfer in a shorter period, you could be risking downtime of your website.

Step Two
What type of site do you have, basic html or with lots of specific features? You need to consider your site needs, before selecting a host that can provide what you need. These days many hosts do allow you to either handle the domain name change yourself or otherwise. Your domain name should not get switched faster than you can get your new files transferred, so you may as well want to handle the domain name change yourself. Your new web hosting account usually will be set up within 24 hours.

Step Three
While waiting for you new web hosting account, you should backup everything possible from your existing site. You should make at least two copies of all data. This gives you one copy to work with and the other to store away.

Step Four
Before changing your domain name, load your files to your new website hosting service, using a temporary login. Most companies usually provide this before your new account is running. Moreover, set up your email accounts even though they might not be working as of yet. Don’t forget the catchall account in case any emails bounce back!

Step Five
You can initiate your domain name change no matter which registrar you used. The only information that will change is the name server information. You should also update your technical contact information on your domain name record though it is not a mandatory move.

Step Six
Depending on which domain registrar you use, you will get one or a few emails to confirm your domain change. It can take up to 48 hours to see the changes. Once the “propagation” is complete, you can cancel your service with the previous host.
